Dr. Rafael Miguel received his medical degree at the Universidad de Cadiz Facultad de Medicina de Cadiz in Cadiz, Spain. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and served as chief resident. He currently holds a joint appointment as professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery and is the director of the Pain Medicine Program in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida.
Dr. Miguel is a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology with subspecialty certification in pain medicine as well as a diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management. He is a member of numerous scientific and medical organizations, including, among others, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Regional Anesthesia, American Medical Association, Florida Medical Association and International Anesthesia Research. He is president of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Miguel serves on many institutional committees and sits on the board of editors of several pain medicine related journals. He has published extensively in the field of anesthesiology and pain management, and has given numerous lectures and presentations in the US and Latin America. He is the recipient of many research grants exploring treatment options for pain management.
